Michael Saulino, M.D., Ph.D., will give a talk, The Clinical Use, Benefits and Risks of Medical Marijuana, hosted by the United Spinal Association Greater Philadelphia Chapter and Restore Integrative Wellness Center, from 5:30 to 7 p.m., December 13, at the MossRehab Main Campus, in Elkins Park.

This educational offering is open to all interested individuals with spinal cord injuries/diseases with associated pain and spasticity disorders. It will also be informative for healthcare providers and clinicians working in the field of rehabilitation.

Saulino, who is board-certified in pain management and spinal cord injury medicine, will present an overview of indications for the legal use of medical marijuana, including Pennsylvania and New Jersey state legislation rules and guidelines; qualifying diagnoses and related clinical presentation; differences in marijuana forms and benefits of each.

Marijuana is derived from the Cannabis sativa plant. It contains more than 100 chemical compounds, called cannabinoids. When ingested or inhaled, these compounds bind to specific receptors in brain and nerve cells, which slows pain impulses and eases discomfort.
