Planting and Tending Philadelphia’s Trees

Tree Tenders Tree canopy
in urban settings is correlated with many health, environmental, and economic
impacts.
One of the oldest
established volunteer tree planting and stewardship programs, Tree Tenders is
at the forefront of the urban tree movement across the country. They offer a
training course and help start a Tree Tenders group in neighborhoods; all
that’s required is three Tree Tenders graduates. The next basic training will
be held from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. January 25 and February 1.
Since 1993, more
than 5,000 volunteers in the region have become certified Tree Tenders,
receiving hands-on training on the biology, identification, planting and proper
care of trees. Each year, with PHS support, neighborhood Tree Tenders groups
plant more than 1,000 trees, and focus on follow-up monitoring and care to
ensure their survival.
